Underground Mining Traffic tunnel construction
Structural and operational technical retrofit
The Michaelstunnel is a two-lane motorway tunnel of approximately 2,540 metres in length that runs in a north-south direction, bypassing the city of Baden-Baden, and takes traffic from the Weststadt slip road to the Black Forest. It was opened to traffic on 5 December 1989.
It had 5 emergency exits, 5 emergency lay-bys and 3 operations centres; the southern third of it offered an additional entry and exit option in the form of a loop.
In response to the imposition of higher safety requirements in accordance with the guidelines for the equipment and operation of road tunnels (RABT 2006), 5 further emergency exits had to be retrofitted (extension of existing rescue tunnel by 1,000 m as well as the construction of a shaft), the operational technology upgraded and supplemented and the intermediate ceiling renewed over a length of 1,762 m.
