The Osterberg tunnel is part of the federal transport infrastructure plan known as Verkehrsprojekte Deutsche Einheit (German Unity transport projects) (VDE) and is located on the high-speed rail line between Erfurt and Leipzig/Halle. The regional centres Erfurt, Halle (Saale) and Leipzig were thus connected by a high-performance railway line sufficient to meet the requirements of modern passenger and freight transport. The two single-track tunnels are each 2.08 km long; the excavation profile amounted to 90-100 square metres. The two tubes were excavated from mottled sandstone using the new Austrian tunnelling method, at least 35 m below ground level.
